Through the Sacrament of Holy Orders a baptized male becomes a priest in the Catholic Church. The role of the priest is to “order” the ministries of all the baptized, to celebrate the Sacraments, and to serve the faithful in building God’s Kingdom. Ordained ministers exercise their service for the People of God by teaching, divine worship and pastoral governance.
Permanent deacons exist in the Latin Church to serve the needs of the community. Deacons can baptize and witness the Sacrament of Marriage, assist at worship, proclaim the Gospel and preach.
